Description

The Rhine bridge (1895), which connects Beinheim (FR) and Wintersdorf (DE), is a real link between France and Germany. It is 600 metres long and spans the Rhine over a length of around 250 metres. Once built by the German Empire for strategic reasons, the 100-year-old bridge was used intensively by the military during the First World War. A few years later, it became the property of France when the country reconquered Alsace and the Moselle. The bridge was destroyed twice during the Second World War. The SNCF rebuilt it from 1947 to 1949 with a railway track and a road. Until 1960, only the French army was allowed to use the road. Only after long negotiations was it opened to passenger traffic.
